At GP Creative, we believe that church websites should be more than a digital billboard — it should serve as both a welcoming front door for first-time guests and a vibrant living room for returning community members. When Upper Arlington Lutheran Church (UALC) approached us for a website refresh, we knew this project was not just about creating an informational site, but about creating a website that reflected the warmth and complexity of their large, intergenerational congregation that meets across two campuses.
Understanding Unique Challenges
UALC’s digital needs were multifaceted. With a wide variety of programs, ministries, and events serving all ages, the site had a lot of information, but still needed to feel inviting and easy to navigate. There was also the challenge of balancing two core audiences: those discovering UALC for the first time and existing church members wanting the most up-to-date information. Multiple internal stakeholders — from pastors and staff to program leaders and volunteers — each had valuable insights, requiring thoughtful collaboration and clear communication.
Simplifying Structure Without Sacrificing Depth
Our approach focused first on the site’s foundational structure…its sitemap. We streamlined pages by organizing content under clear headings and using engaging images that reflected UALC’s community. Key action items and program highlights became easier to find, with links positioned for intuitive navigation.
To enhance user experience, we introduced a clear, simple main menu aimed at new visitors looking for essential information: more information about the church, how to visit, upcoming events, and recent messages. For those seeking more, we built out a secondary expanded mega menu. This allowed deeper exploration of everything UALC offers — ministries, service opportunities, events — without overwhelming the main navigation.
